American Respiratory Alliance - Then

House on the Hill

In the early 1900's over 90% of Pittsburgh’s population had become infected with Tuberculosis (TB)! One active TB patient infected up to 10 others annually. A private home in what is now Pittsburgh's Hill District was donated as a hospital for TB and a charter was granted to the Pittsburgh Sanatorium. It was the first name of the organization now called the American Respiratory Alliance. With a mission to fight TB, the Pittsburgh Sanatorium provided the only known remedy for TB at that time - plenty of rest, fresh air and adequate nutrition to strengthen the body's defenses. This remedy was called, “taking the cure”.

NOW

American Respiratory Alliance - Now

Education Session

Today the American Respiratory Alliance continues its commitment to infectious diseases, but based on years of results from mass chest x-rays conducted in the 1950's and 60's, the organization officially expanded its singular emphasis from tuberculosis to respiratory disease prevention and control. Programs targeting asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema as well as smoking cessation are conducted annually throughout the community and include free educational programs in the school systems and at our special asthma camp.

At the American Respiratory Alliance, we are proud of the many Milestones we have reached.
