Since 1904, the American Respiratory Alliance of Western Pennsylvania has promoted the fight against tuberculosis. Although the organization name and mission evolved to include the prevention of all lung disease, the Alliance continues to pioneer TB programs and services.
Today, the Alliance offers public and professional TB education materials, training and financial support for tuberculosis services and research. Professional programs include publication of tuberculosis treatment standards to assure current and consistent regimens for patient care; TB Skin Test Training Workshops that teach health care workers how to organize and implement a TB testing program including administration and interpretation of the Mantoux tuberculin skin test; a TB exposure control manual that assists facilities with OSHA compliance; model TB arms for teaching skin test interpretation, rulers to measure TB test reactions and patient information wallet cards.
The Alliance also implements public awareness campaigns and professional TB seminars as needed in the region. Historical literature about tuberculosis and a library of audio and visual materials are available.
