School Personnel

HealthyLungs School Asthma Initiative (SAI) provides free resources to school personnel—including school nurses—that help them to understand and handle the management of children with asthma in schools. HealthyLungs can provide school personnel with: For School Nurses:

  • Asthma Toolkit for Schools with Standing Orders – The toolkit includes one (1) albuterol MDI, two (2) spacers/chambers, three (3) Lite-Aire disposable chambers, one (1) peak flow meter, ten (10) disposable peak flow meter mouth pieces and two (2) student asthma profiles. The school can also request a nebulizer.
  • Education for Students with Asthma Program – Two (2) one-hour sessions at school that use the Asthma Action Profile to teach children about asthma, identify triggers, and early warning signs.
  • Student Asthma Kit – The kit includes an Asthma Action Profile, a spacer, and a peak flow meter. Must attend educational session in order to receive.
  • Asthma Training for School Personnel-Training provides an overview of asthma basics and how to manage an asthma attack in and out of the classroom.

For All School Personnel:

  • Asthma in the Classroom – Provides an overview of what to look for and how to proceed if a child is having an asthma attack.
  • Asthma Action Profile– Workbook that outlines what information and education is needed to properly manage asthma.
  • “Strategize and Be Asthma-Wize”– In addition to the educational session, parents of high school students receive a checklist to support these students as they prepare to graduate and start on a path of independent living and proper asthma management.
